The single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada is the transportation of people and goods, contributing about 25% of the total emissions. Gasoline-powered vehicles, specifically our private automobiles, represent about 75% of that. On average, each automobile produces about 5 metric tonnes of emissions each year. Given that there are over 17 million registered automobiles in Canada - that means 85 million metric tonnes of emissions are pumped into the atmosphere each year. Each of us can contribute something to reducing the emissions from this source.
One of COOL Caledons objectives is to help people take action in reducing emissions from the vehicles they use. Here are a few ideas:
Work at home one day a week (or more!) wonderful for the psyche, and for our public health
Purchase a more fuel-efficient vehicle when its time to get a new one
Buy cleaner burning fuels did you know using premium fuel produces fewer emissions and gives better gas mileage? Consider ethanol-based gasoline too
Eliminate excessive idling even on cold days, a 10 second warm up and low rpm acceleration is the best way to get your car going in the morning
Carpooling sometimes a challenge in our rural environment, but its a great way to get to know your neighbors and co-workers
Trip planning were all pretty good at this, especially when we live several kilometers from the nearest grocery store. Saves time and money too!
Live locally patronizing local stores, food producers, service providers, restaurants, social clubs and sports organizations not only supports local business owners and builds community spirit, but reduces greenhouse gas and smog emissions
Taking action will help clean the air and lead to healthier living, reduced traffic congestion while saving money for priorities, resulting in a more sustainable, livable and enjoyable Caledon for everyone.
