Elementary, Middle and Secondary School
Teachers and Adult Educators

COOL Caledon has created material we hope you can use and integrate with your existing science, social science, anthropology, environment, chemistry, geography, or current affairs curricula. There are three different levels:

• COOL School Elementary;
• COOL School Middle / Secondary; and
• Post Secondary / Adult Continuing Education.

The primary focus of these curriculum enhancing material is energy
conservation. It includes information about why we have to change our energy use habits, and ideas about how to conserve energy, save money and clean our air in the process. In addition, there is a slide to promote discussion of sources of renewable energy in the Middle / Secondary and Post Secondary material.

Our COOL School material is more than a presentation - it's especially
interactive for the school-age students. There can be up to five separate modules and activities:

1)
Presentation and Discussion (20 min.);
2) Incandescent vs. Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb (CFL)
Lightbox Demonstration with the Kill-a-watt (5 min.);
3)
Carbon Dioxide Climate Change Game (20 min.);
4) Take Home Personal / Family
Energy Challenge Exercise (10 min.); and
5)
Class / Team Activity (5 min.).

Total time: about an hour (all modules and activities)

The curriculum supporting material includes a hard copy of the 'Green
Teacher' Teaching About Climate Change Guide Book. This is an excellent resource for practitioners for effectively teaching and enabling learning of the critical aspects of climate change, conservation and renewable energy.

You can choose to deliver this material yourself, but we recommend that you call our Electricity Doctor to come to your class in person and meet with your students. It's a great opportunity to bring in an outside resource. We can also provide activity 2) the Incandescent and CFL Lightbox demonstration. It's a mechanical device which allows participants to see and feel how much more efficient CFLs are vs. incandescents.

If COOL Caledon's Electricity Doctor presents the material, all activities are available, with activities 3) and 5) considered optional.

If you decide to deliver the material yourself, activity 2) is not available unless you devise the demonstration yourself (we can help you with ideas for that!). Activities 3) and 5) are still considered optional.

The curriculum is flexible and can be adapted to suit your needs and time constraints. For instance, activities 3) the Carbon Dioxide Climate Change Game and 5) the Class / Team Activity could be saved for another time slot.

We believe this type of format is engaging and our testing shows that
interest is maintained and follow through achieved, obtaining real results. Doing something (like installing a few CFLs or turning down the temperature setting on your hot water tank) about energy conservation is the aim of this curriculum enhancement.

The material for the Post Secondary / Adult Continuing Education audience is in presentation format only and is designed to promote an interactive discussion about how we as adults can change the way we use energy - to demonstrate for others, especially those younger, how to create less of an impact on the Earth for the benefit of future generations.

Call the COOL Caledon Hotline at 905.584.2272 Ext. 4253 and talk with our Electricity Doctor. We will be glad to assist!

How to use the COOL School Elementary and Middle / Secondary School Curriculum material:

1) Presentation and Discussion (20 min.)

Download your selection from the three (3) PowerPoint presentations.
Teaching notes / discussion ideas are included in the 'notes' view. This forms the foundation of the curriculum and for the in-person session and discussion.

2) Incandescent vs. Compact Fluorescent Lightbulb (CFL) Lightbox Demonstration with the Kill-a-watt (5 min.)

COOL Caledon's Electricity Doctor has a fantastic demonstration of how CFLs are much more energy efficient than traditional incandescent lightbulbs. Everybody loves this one! If it's not possible for us to attend, we can provide ideas for assembling your own demonstration, including borrowing a Kill-a-watt device from your local branch of the Caledon Library System.

3) Carbon Dioxide Climate Change Game (20 min.) (Optional)

The Carbon Dioxide Game is a fun, active way to explain the greenhouse effect and the human contribution to global climate change. The game can be played with groups of up to 30 students, age 10 and older, and will:

A) demonstrate the greenhouse effect by showing how CO2 in the atmosphere traps heat and insulates the Earth; and
B) show that human activities affect the concentration of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

A full description, a list of materials and the procedure can be downloaded from the website.

4) Take Home Personal / Family Energy Challenge Exercise (10 min.)

Download and reproduce the 'Personal NRG Challenge' file from the website. We recommend printing / copying it in colour, 2-sided to save paper and make it easier for students to use it as a practical tool for encouraging energy savings at home.

Hand out the forms and give the students about 5 minutes to make their selections and devise a plan. After a reasonable time, ask a few
participants to share some aspects of their plans to save energy at home, and how they might work with their families or friends. Also ask them why they chose certain items.

This activity is a review of learnings, brings a sense of closure and some personal action and commitment to why we have to become more aware of how our use of energy impacts climate change.

5) Class / Team Activity (5 min.) (Optional)

To close the session, ask the class if they would like to participate in a
longer term, more sustainable activity focusing on energy conservation, wise water use, and / or recycling initiatives at the school. Form small Energy, Water and Recycling Auditor teams of interested students. Task team members with generating ideas for using less energy, water and more recycling. Ask them to report back to you and the class in a months time with their ideas about how to accomplish what their team was asked. Ask the Principal and the maintenance staff to listen to the students suggestions and recommendations. Work with them to develop a marketing campaign to raise the awareness of the student body of the adopted ideas and implementation of them. The Electricity Doctor and COOL Caledon,via partnerships with other organizations, can provide curriculum support for this module and related activities.
